Amsterdam, 9 Jan 2025. In this article published in Het Financieele Dagblad, Sandra Olsthoorn asks whether 2025 will be the year generative AI truly breaks through. On the technology side, OpenAI's o3 model has reignited optimism, with its "chain of thought" reasoning representing a fundamental shift in how models improve. On the business side, the economics remain precarious: AI companies are losing billions, open-source models are eroding the case for expensive proprietary subscriptions, and profit remains elusive for most. Enterprise adoption is picking up but still slow, hampered by the gap between experimentation and full-scale implementation. Meanwhile, the European AI Act is beginning to take effect, with key provisions — including bans on social scoring and emotion recognition in the workplace — coming into force, and greater transparency requirements for major model providers due later in the year.
