ASML CEO: Europe's strategic autonomy is not the goal of the Mistral investment

Amsterdam, 9 Sep 2025. Published in Het Financieele Dagblad, this article reports on ASML's €1.3bn investment in French AI company Mistral. ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet insists the rationale is purely commercial: each ASML machine generates roughly one terabyte of data per day, and Mistral's models — which can be run in a fully controlled environment without data leaving ASML — offer a way to extract far more value from that data than current software allows. Fouquet explicitly distances the deal from European sovereignty motives, though he acknowledges that if it contributes to that goal, so much the better. Rewire CEO Wouter Huygen is less convinced, seeing geopolitical logic alongside the commercial case — with Huygen describing it as "two birds, one stone."
