The partnership is significant on several levels. It ties together two of Europe\u2019s leading technology firms: ASML, the Dutch maker of the world\u2019s most advanced chip equipment, and Mistral, a fast-growing AI company known for its open-source models and focus on business applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it is tempting to celebrate the boost to \u201cEuropean sovereignty\u201d, the benefits go far beyond this.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"at-spacer at-spacer--69d24811eed10\" style=\"background-color: transparent\">\n<style>\n\/* Ultrawide *\/\n.at-spacer--69d24811eed10 {\n    height: 10px;\n}\n\n\/* Desktop *\/\n@media (max-width: 1920px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eed10 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n\n\/* Laptop *\/\n@media (max-width: 1024px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eed10 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n\n\/* Mobile *\/\n@media (max-width: 767px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eed10 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Introducing Mistral<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mistral.ai\/\"><strong>Mistral<\/strong><\/a> is a French artificial intelligence company, founded in 2023, that develops <strong>large language models (LLMs)<\/strong>, similar to OpenAI\u2019s GPT models, but with two distinctive choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, it is <strong>open source by default. <\/strong>Unlike <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\"><strong>OpenAI<\/strong><\/a> or <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/\"><strong>Anthropic<\/strong><\/a>, which keep their models closed, Mistral releases its models openly. This means businesses, developers, and researchers can download, adapt, and fine-tune them for their own purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, it <strong>focuses on<\/strong> <strong>smaller, specialized models<\/strong>. In addition to training large, general-purpose models, Mistral emphasizes smaller, efficient models that can be fine-tuned on a company\u2019s own data for specific workflows. These models are cheaper to run, require less computing power, and can often perform better when tailored to a narrow domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mistral is often seen as Europe\u2019s flagship AI start-up, both because of its rapid progress and because it represents a European alternative to US (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and Chinese (Alibaba, DeepSeek) players.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"at-spacer at-spacer--69d24811eeef7\" style=\"background-color: transparent\">\n<style>\n\/* Ultrawide *\/\n.at-spacer--69d24811eeef7 {\n    height: 10px;\n}\n\n\/* Desktop *\/\n@media (max-width: 1920px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eeef7 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n\n\/* Laptop *\/\n@media (max-width: 1024px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eeef7 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n\n\/* Mobile *\/\n@media (max-width: 767px) {\n    .at-spacer--69d24811eeef7 {\n        height: 10px;\n    }\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The reality of Enterprise AI, today<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadly speaking, LLMs are applied in two ways within companies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Personal productivity.<\/strong> Through ChatGPT, or, as we increasingly see, variants developed by companies for internal use, which employees can use to optimize their tasks. In this case, the <em>breadth<\/em> of the model is important: it needs to handle all kinds of questions, so general purpose models, such as ChatGPT, works best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tailored AI solutions to optimize specific workflows.<\/strong> In these cases, domain specialization is what usually matters most: the input\/output expected from the model is limited to a narrowly defined objective \u2013 for example the processing of claims in the insurance industry. Here the model doesn\u2019t need to know anything about unrelated fields (quantum mechanics, say). However&#8230; the reality is that most companies aren\u2019t yet focused on optimizing costs or efficiency. Instead, they\u2019re still at the stage of asking: \u201cHow can we make our processes and workflows AI-driven, and implement a first working solution at scale?\u201d At that stage, it\u2019s more than sufficient to call on a generic (and therefore large and costly) language model from OpenAI or Anthropic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>What it all means for Enterprise AI, in the future<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to US competitors, Mistral has prioritized developers and the Enterprise segment from the start \u2013 its customers include Stellantis (automotive), CMA CGM (shipping), and several European government agencies. With the ASML tie up, Mistral secures funding, credibility, and a major industrial partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while ASML gains access to Mistral\u2019s AI expertise to improve chipmaking tools and develop new capabilities for customers, the hope is that the partnership will boost to the development of the AI ecosystem in Europe, and, with it, innovations that will benefit the enterprise space, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">For enterprises, the key takeaway is clear: the future of AI in business won\u2019t just be about <em>big<\/em> models. It will increasingly be about smaller, specialized, fine-tuned models, and about having the freedom to adapt them to your own workflows.
